UV filtration for household water, and where it fits

Ultraviolet treatment is the one piece of household water equipment that is not really a filter at all. It passes water through a chamber past a lamp emitting germicidal ultraviolet light, which scrambles the DNA of bacteria, viruses and protozoa so they cannot reproduce, and it changes nothing else about the water at all.

How the lamp actually works

Water flows through an annular chamber around a quartz sleeve, inside which the lamp sits dry. The organisms passing through receive a dose that depends on the lamp output and how long they are exposed, which is why flow rate is the critical specification. Push more water through than the unit is rated for and the dose drops below what is needed, without any visible sign that anything is wrong. Nothing is captured or removed: what goes in comes out, only no longer capable of making you ill.

Why it belongs on well water

Private wells are not regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act the way community systems are, so nobody disinfects the water before it reaches the house. The EPA notes that around 15 percent of the US population, over 43 million people, rely on private wells, and that a USGS study of 2,100 private wells found about one in five carried at least one contaminant above a human health benchmark. UV gives a well owner continuous microbiological protection without adding chemicals or changing taste.

It only works on water that is already clear

Ultraviolet light has to reach the organism, and anything that blocks or scatters light defeats it. Sediment shields bacteria from the lamp, iron and manganese stain the quartz sleeve, and hardness scales it, all of which cut transmission steadily until the unit is doing far less than it appears to. That is why UV is fitted last in a treatment train, after sediment filtration and after any iron, manganese or hardness treatment. The maintenance the salesman does not dwell on

The lamp is replaced annually even though it still glows, because the germicidal output falls well before the visible light does. The quartz sleeve is cleaned on the same schedule, and replaced when it clouds. If the power fails, so does the treatment, so many installations use a solenoid valve that shuts off flow when the lamp fails or a controller that alarms. Treat the annual service as part of owning the equipment, not an optional upsell.

What UV cannot do for you

It removes no lead, no nitrate, no arsenic, no PFAS, no hardness, no iron and no taste or odor. It does not clear cloudy water and it does not make the water look or taste different in any way. If your problem is chemical or aesthetic, UV is the wrong purchase entirely and a filter or reverse osmosis system is what you need. UV answers exactly one question: is this water biologically safe as it passes the lamp.

Questions people ask about uv filtration

Does UV replace chlorination for a well?

For continuous treatment it usually does, and it avoids chlorine taste and storage. Shock chlorination is still used for disinfecting the well itself after work or contamination, since UV only treats water passing the chamber.

How do I know the lamp is still effective?

You cannot tell by looking, because the visible glow outlasts the germicidal output. Replace annually, keep the sleeve clean, and choose a unit with a UV intensity sensor and alarm if you want real feedback.

Does a UV unit need a filter in front of it?

Yes, at minimum a sediment filter, because particles shield organisms from the light. Iron, manganese and hardness also need handling first or they will foul the quartz sleeve and cut the dose.

Is UV treated water safe to store?

It is safe when it leaves the chamber, but it carries no residual disinfectant, so anything downstream that harbors bacteria can recontaminate it. That is one reason UV is fitted as close to the point of use as practical.
