A UV filter for well water is a lamp in a quartz sleeve that inactivates bacteria, viruses and protozoa as the water flows past it. On a private well it is the most common continuous microbial barrier, because it adds no chemical, changes nothing about taste, and needs no contact tank. What it demands in return is clear water and honest maintenance.
Why well owners end up buying one
Private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, and roughly 15 percent of the US population, over 43 million people in more than 23 million households, relies on them. A USGS study of 2,100 private wells found about one in five carried at least one contaminant above a human-health benchmark. Nobody is monitoring your well, so a coliform positive is something you discover only by testing, and ultraviolet is the standard answer once the well itself has been investigated and disinfected.
Clear water first, or it does nothing
Ultraviolet works by light reaching the organism. Sediment, iron, manganese, tannins and general turbidity absorb or scatter that light, and particles physically shield organisms passing behind them. That is why every UV installation on a well has a sediment filter ahead of it, and why wells with iron or color need those treated first. A lamp glowing in cloudy water looks exactly like a lamp doing its job, which is the most dangerous failure mode in household water treatment.
It treats organisms and nothing else
Ultraviolet does not remove iron, hardness, nitrate, arsenic, sulfur smell, sediment or anything chemical. It leaves the water chemically identical to how it arrived. On most wells it is therefore the last stage of a train: sediment removal first, then iron or sulfur treatment if the test calls for it, then softening if hardness needs it, then the lamp. Fitting a lamp alone to a well with staining or odor solves a problem the owner did not have.
Sizing on flow, not on household size
The dose an organism receives depends on the lamp intensity and how long the water is exposed, so units carry a maximum flow rating. If the house can draw more than that when several fixtures run together, water passes too fast for a full dose. Size on peak flow including outside taps, and remember that a well pump delivers whatever the pressure tank and pump curve allow. Vendor pages state the rated flow for each model, and exceeding it silently undercuts the treatment.
The maintenance that actually matters
Replace the lamp on the manufacturer's schedule, usually annually, because output falls long before the lamp goes dark. Clean the quartz sleeve of the film that hard or iron bearing water leaves on it. Change the sediment prefilter on time. And test the treated water for coliform at least once a year, because that test is the only proof the whole train works. Does a UV filter remove iron or sulfur smell from well water?
No. Ultraviolet only inactivates organisms and changes nothing chemically. Iron staining and rotten egg odor need oxidation and filtration ahead of the lamp.
How often should I test after installing UV?
