Ultraviolet is the standard microbiological barrier on a private well and it is also the stage most often installed on water that will ruin it. Iron, manganese and hardness all deposit on the quartz sleeve that the lamp sits inside, and every deposit reduces the light reaching the water. The system keeps running, the lamp keeps glowing, and the treatment quietly stops.
How iron defeats a lamp
The lamp never touches the water: it sits inside a quartz sleeve, and all of its output has to pass through that sleeve. Iron in the water deposits as a film on the outside of the sleeve, and manganese does the same in a darker form. Both are gradual, both are invisible from outside the chamber, and both cut the delivered dose while the unit reports nothing wrong. Hardness scales the same surface with the same effect. That is why iron treatment is not an optional refinement ahead of a lamp; it is a precondition.
Iron bacteria make it worse
Where a well carries iron bacteria, the problem is not only deposits but slime. Biological films shield organisms from the light, so even a clean sleeve and a fresh lamp deliver less than the dose implies, and the slime also fouls filters and screens upstream. Iron bacteria need disinfection to clear, typically shock chlorination and often continuous chlorination afterwards, which on such a well is frequently the better primary treatment because chlorination oxidizes the iron at the same time.
The order that works
Sediment filtration first, since particles shade organisms and grit damages everything. Then iron and manganese treatment, sized from a laboratory result: a softener can handle dissolved iron within its limits, and above them an oxidizing filter is needed. Then softening if hardness demands it. Then the ultraviolet chamber, last, as close as practical to where water enters the house. Reversing any of that puts the lamp behind a problem it cannot see and cannot report.
Proving it after installation
The EPA notes that private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, so no utility is sampling on your behalf and the system produces no evidence of its own. Test the treated water after commissioning and periodically afterwards. Clean the sleeve and change the lamp annually regardless of appearance, and inspect the sleeve for staining at each visit: a sleeve that films between services is telling you the pretreatment is not keeping up.
