The two tank approach

A filter tank and a softener in series, each with its own valve, its own backwash schedule and its own media life. It takes more floor space, more plumbing and more money up front. In return each stage is sized for its own duty, the filter protects the resin, and a failure or a media change affects one tank rather than the whole system. What decides it in practice

Space and access come first: many utility closets simply cannot take two tanks plus a brine tank with clearance to service them. Then water chemistry: a supply needing iron oxidation, sulfur removal or pH correction has already outgrown a combination unit. Then flow: two tanks in series drop more pressure, so a marginal well pump argues for one vessel. Finally the owner's tolerance for maintenance, since two systems mean two schedules and two sets of parts.

Costs that show up after the purchase

Salt use is driven by the softening capacity and by how often the valve regenerates, not by whether the media share a tank. Media replacement is where the two diverge: a combination bed is replaced as a unit on the shorter of the two media lives, while separate tanks let carbon be changed without disturbing resin that has years left. Add the drain water each regeneration sends away, and the annual figure is usually closer between the two than the purchase price suggests.
