A softener on a municipal supply is a simple drawing: main, softener, house. On a well it is one stage in a train, and its position relative to the pressure tank, the iron treatment and any disinfection is what decides whether the resin survives. A layout sketch is worth making because those relationships are hard to change later.
Everything starts at the pressure tank
The well pump fills a pressure tank, and the treatment train begins downstream of it, because equipment needs steady pressure rather than a pump cycling on and off against it. The exception is coarse sediment removal: a centrifugal separator or spindown screen often sits ahead of the pressure tank so sand never reaches it, which the tank and pump both benefit from. Draw the tank, the pump control and the pressure switch, since anything that changes pressure changes how every stage downstream behaves.
The order that protects the resin
Sediment first. Then pH correction if the water is acidic, because iron and especially manganese oxidation are pH sensitive. Then iron and manganese treatment, so oxidized particles never reach the resin, which they foul rather than pass through. Then the softener. Then carbon where taste or chlorine need addressing. Then any membrane. Then ultraviolet last, as close as practical to where the water branches into the house. Every one of those placements exists because a stage damages or is damaged by a neighbour.
The connections the softener needs
Three, and all three go on the drawing. A drain line with an air gap, run within the length and lift the valve can manage, since a restricted drain quietly ruins regeneration. A brine line to the salt tank, with the tank positioned so bags can actually be carried to it. And a power supply for the control valve. Add a bypass across the softener itself, so it can be taken out of circuit for service or to prove whether it is causing a symptom.

A sampling tap between every stage, which turns future diagnosis into a measurement rather than a guess. Isolation valves and unions at every vessel. Headroom above each tank to lift the valve and load media, and clearance below cartridge housings equal to a cartridge length. A whole system bypass.
