A sediment prefilter ahead of the softener is close to mandatory, protecting the control valve's moving parts and keeping grit out of the resin bed. Iron is the subtler threat. Penn State Extension notes softeners can remove dissolved iron when conditions are right, pH above 6.7 and dissolved iron under 5 mg/L among them, but oxidized iron fouls resin, and well water that meets air anywhere upstream arrives partly oxidized. Check the softener's regeneration flow requirement against what your well delivers, schedule cycles for the small hours when nothing competes, and consider demand-initiated regeneration so the unit regenerates on gallons used rather than a fixed clock, saving both salt and well capacity.
