The softener does the softening, but on well water it typically stands behind a sediment filter and, where iron or sulfur is present, a dedicated iron filter, because those upstream stages are what keep the softener alive. Getting the order right matters more than any single component choice.

Why a well needs more than the softener tank

Municipal water arrives filtered and disinfected, so a city softener can stand alone. Well water arrives exactly as the aquifer delivers it: sand and grit that abrade the control valve, dissolved or oxidized iron that coats the resin, sometimes sulfur odor or low pH. A softener asked to absorb all of that fails early and softens poorly while it lasts. The system, in the proper sense, is the set of stages that deals with each problem in turn so the resin bed only ever sees clean, iron-managed water.

The order of the train

The conventional sequence after the pressure tank is: sediment filter first, to protect everything downstream from grit; then iron, sulfur or pH treatment where the test says it is needed; then the softener; then any polishing carbon filter; with ultraviolet disinfection last if bacteria are a concern, because UV works best on water that is already clear. Each stage protects the next. Put the softener ahead of the iron filter and you have paid twice: once for the iron filter and once for the resin the iron ruined anyway.

How much iron a softener can carry on its own

Penn State Extension's guidance is specific: a softener can remove dissolved iron when the pH is above 6.7, hardness falls between 3 and 20 grains per gallon and dissolved iron stays under 5 mg/L, and oxidized iron will foul the resin. That is the boundary between a system that is just a softener with a sediment filter and one that needs a dedicated iron stage. Your lab report tells you which side of the line you are on; do not guess from the color of the tub stain.
