The favor returns at the tap: softened water carries exchanged sodium, harmless to plumbing but noticeable to some palates and unwelcome in sodium-restricted diets, and the RO membrane rejects it along with everything else it rejects. The softener goes on the main line after the meter or pressure tank, before every branch. The RO unit goes under the kitchen sink, fed from the cold line downstream of the softener so the membrane receives softened water, with its own faucet on the counter and its concentrate line to the drain.
