It is the last thing the water touches, so a stale post-filter shows up directly as a flat or musty taste even when everything upstream is fine. Some systems add a remineralization cartridge that puts back a little calcium and magnesium, which changes taste and raises pH slightly, and some add a UV lamp as a final barrier. Neither is required for the system to work; both add another consumable to the calendar. Doing a change without wrecking anything
Shut off the feed valve and the tank valve, open the faucet to relieve pressure, then work front to back. Sanitize the housings if the system has been open, and flush the new cartridges before you drink from them, because fresh carbon sheds fine black dust. If you replace the membrane, run the system to fill and dump the first tank or two rather than drinking it, since preservative residue and loose carbon fines need clearing.
