The RO membrane filter is the element that does the actual separating in a reverse osmosis system. Everything else in the housing bank protects it or polishes what comes out of it. It is a sheet of thin film composite material wound in a spiral around a central tube, and pressure pushes water through the film while most dissolved contaminants are swept away to the drain.
Spiral wound, and why that shape
Unwound, a membrane element is a long sandwich: two sheets of thin film composite glued along three edges with a permeate spacer between them, and a mesh feed spacer on the outside. Rolled around a perforated tube, that sandwich packs a large membrane area into a cartridge the size of a rolled magazine. Feed water travels along the outside of the roll under pressure, a fraction passes through the film into the envelope, spirals inward and leaves through the center tube as product water. The rest keeps moving across the surface and exits as concentrate. The cross flow is deliberate: it is what keeps the rejected material moving instead of caking on the film.
Rejection is a share, not a wall
A membrane does not sort contaminants into blocked and allowed the way a screen does. It rejects a high proportion of dissolved salts, metals and larger molecules while letting water through, and the proportion depends on the ion, the pressure, the temperature and the age of the film. That is why RO product water is very low in dissolved solids but never at zero, and why vendors quote rejection as a percentage of what arrived rather than a promise about any single substance. Feed pressure and water temperature both move the number: cold water is more viscous and a membrane fed cold produces less, which is why winter performance can look like a fault when it is physics.
What kills a membrane before its time
Three things end membranes early. Chlorine and chloramine attack thin film composite directly, which is the entire reason a carbon block sits ahead of the membrane and why letting that carbon exhaust is a genuine failure rather than a taste issue. Sediment and silt blind the feed spacer and channel the flow. Iron, manganese and hardness scale precipitate on the surface when the concentrate stream is not carrying enough away, and a well with iron will foul a membrane quickly unless the iron is treated first. Every one of those is a pretreatment problem, which is why an RO with neglected prefilters is really an RO with a shortened membrane life.
Knowing when yours is finished
Membranes fail gradually. The early signs are taste returning, a longer wait for the storage tank to fill, and product water whose dissolved solids reading has climbed toward the feed. A cheap handheld meter comparing feed and product water is the honest test, because it separates a tired membrane from a clogged prefilter: if replacing the prefilters restores flow, the membrane was never the problem. Sizing and drain ratio
Elements are sold by production rating and by physical size, so a replacement must match both the housing and the flow restrictor that came with the system. The restrictor sets how much concentrate leaves the membrane, and pairing a higher capacity element with the wrong restrictor upsets that balance in ways that either waste water or scale the film. If you are upgrading rather than replacing like for like, change the restrictor to the one specified for the new element. Keep the old part numbers written on the housing bracket. Questions people ask about ro membrane filter
Is the RO membrane the same as the filter cartridges?
No. The cartridges are sediment and carbon filters that protect the membrane and polish taste. The membrane is the separating element and it lasts far longer, provided the cartridges ahead of it are changed on time.
Why does my RO membrane produce less water in winter?
Cold water is more viscous and passes through the film more slowly, so production drops when the incoming supply is cold. It is normal behavior rather than a fault, and output recovers as the feed warms.
Can chlorinated city water damage the membrane?

Do I need to sanitize when changing a membrane?
