The membrane is the only part of a reverse osmosis system that does the separating. Everything else in the stack exists to protect it or to make its output usable. It is a tightly wound sheet that lets water pass under pressure while leaving most dissolved material behind, and it fails slowly rather than suddenly, which is why people keep using a spent one for months without noticing.

What separation actually happens at the sheet

Household RO uses a thin film composite membrane wound into a spiral around a central tube. Line pressure pushes water against the sheet, and the water that works its way through moves to the permeate side and out to the storage tank. Dissolved salts, most metals and larger organic molecules do not fit through and stay in the water that keeps flowing across the surface, which leaves to drain. That cross flow is not waste in the sense of a leak: it is what carries rejected material away and stops it caking on the sheet. Choke the drain line and the membrane fouls in weeks rather than years.

The prefilters are part of the membrane's life expectancy

A sediment stage and a carbon stage sit ahead of the membrane, and neither is optional. Sediment plugs the feed channels mechanically, so grit that gets past a tired prefilter shortens membrane life directly. Carbon has a different job: chlorine attacks thin film composite material and degrades its rejection permanently, so the carbon block is the only thing standing between municipal water and a ruined sheet. This is why the replacement intervals differ. Prefilters are changed on a schedule, the membrane is changed on evidence, and skipping the first guarantees you will be doing the second early.

Telling a spent membrane from a system problem

Two symptoms point at the membrane: output that tastes or measures like the feed water, and a tank that fills far more slowly than it used to. Check the simple causes first, because both symptoms have impostors. Low incoming pressure, a partly closed feed valve, a waterlogged storage tank with no air charge, and a clogged postfilter all slow production without the membrane being at fault. A TDS reading taken at the feed and again at the membrane output, before the tank, separates the cases: if the two readings have converged, the sheet is passing what it used to reject and it is finished.

Hardness minerals scale a membrane the same way they scale a kettle element, and scale is not reversible. On hard water, feeding the RO from a softened line is the single change that most extends membrane life, which is why so many houses run both. How long should an RO membrane last?

In a home on treated municipal water with prefilters changed on time, several years is normal. On hard or iron bearing well water without pretreatment, the same membrane can be finished inside a year.

Can you clean an RO membrane instead of replacing it?

Commercial systems are chemically cleaned, but household cartridges are not built for it. Once rejection has dropped in a domestic unit, replacement is the practical answer.

Why does the system send water to the drain?

That cross flow sweeps rejected minerals off the membrane surface. Restricting it to save water fouls the sheet quickly and costs far more than it saves.

Does chlorine really damage the membrane?
