An RO water tank is the small pressurized vessel that sits under the sink next to the filter housings. A reverse osmosis membrane produces water slowly, a drip at a time, so the tank banks that output and then pushes it back up to the faucet on demand. Almost every complaint about a slow RO faucet traces back to this tank rather than to the membrane.

A bladder and a cushion of air

Inside a standard RO tank is a rubber or butyl bladder separating two spaces. Water fills the bladder; the sealed space around it holds compressed air. As the membrane produces, the bladder swells and squeezes the air harder, storing energy. Open the faucet and that compressed air drives the water out. The tank is therefore not a bucket, it is a spring. The stated capacity is always more than you can actually draw, because the air cushion must keep enough pressure to deliver water at a usable flow right to the last glass.

The air charge is the thing that goes wrong
