Why RO water tastes flat in the first place
Taste in drinking water comes largely from dissolved solids. Strip out the calcium, magnesium, bicarbonate and sodium and what is left reads as thin or slightly sharp on the tongue, even though nothing is wrong with it. Water with very little dissolved mineral also has almost no buffering capacity, so it picks up carbon dioxide from the air and drifts slightly acidic while it sits in the storage tank. Drops, mineral salts and pitcher options
If you do not want another cartridge under the sink, concentrated mineral drops or a measured pinch of a magnesium and calcium blend do the same job in the glass or the carafe. This gives you fine control, which matters if you are remineralizing for coffee or tea, where brewers usually want a specific mineral profile rather than simply more of everything. The trade-off is that it is a manual step somebody has to remember for every batch, and dosing by eye gives inconsistent results. Do you actually need to remineralize?
Drinking water is not where most people get their calcium and magnesium, so the case for remineralizing is mainly taste, plus a modest reduction in how aggressive the water is toward metal fittings downstream of the membrane. Does remineralizing undo the filtration?
No. The cartridge adds back calcium and magnesium only, after the membrane has already rejected the contaminants, so nothing that was removed is being returned to the water.
Will remineralized RO water scale my kettle?
It can leave a light film over time, because you are deliberately adding hardness back. The dose is small compared with untreated hard tap water, so scaling is far slower than it would be on the raw supply.
