The RO membrane is the stage that makes reverse osmosis different from every other filter: a semi-permeable film that lets water molecules through while rejecting most dissolved solids into a drain stream. Everything else in the system exists to protect it, feed it and store what it produces, so understanding the membrane is understanding the system.

How the membrane rejects what filters cannot

A conventional filter strains particles or adsorbs chemicals; the membrane works at the molecular scale. Pressurized feed water is forced against a thin composite film wound into a spiral cartridge, and water molecules pass through while dissolved salts, metals and most other solutes are held back and swept to the drain by the concentrate stream. That is why RO handles what carbon passes: dissolved solids are not particles to strain or organics to adsorb, and only the membrane's rejection mechanism touches them.

What kills membranes early

Membranes rarely die of old age; they are killed. Chlorine chemically degrades the film, which is why a carbon prefilter sits in front of the membrane and why changing that prefilter on schedule is really membrane maintenance. Sediment abrades and blinds the spiral when the sediment stage is neglected. Hard feed water scales the membrane surface, a known issue on wells and a reason softening upstream extends membrane life. The membrane announces its decline in measurements, not leaks. Product-water total dissolved solids climbing steadily toward the feed reading means rejection is failing; a cheap TDS meter turns this into a routine check.
