What shortens membrane life
Chlorine is the killer: it chemically degrades thin-film membranes, which is why every RO system puts a carbon filter ahead of the membrane and why skipping prefilter changes quietly executes it. Sediment abrades and blinds the surface when the sediment stage is spent. Hard water scales the membrane, so heavily hard supplies deserve softening upstream or more frequent replacement. Low water pressure does not damage the membrane but starves it, producing water slowly and rejecting less efficiently than the same membrane under proper pressure.

A failing membrane announces itself two ways: production slows until the tank never seems full, or rejection fades so treated water starts tasting like tap again.
