Reverse osmosis membrane cleaning, and when to replace instead

Cleaning a reverse osmosis membrane is standard practice at commercial scale and rarely worth attempting on a household cartridge. The distinction is not snobbery: large systems are designed with the connections, the pumps and the instrumentation to circulate cleaning solutions and to verify the result, and a small under sink element has none of those.

What fouls a membrane, and why it matters here

Three things foul membranes and they respond differently. Scale is hardness minerals deposited where the water is being concentrated, and it can sometimes be dissolved with an acidic cleaner. Biofouling and organic fouling form a film that an alkaline cleaner can lift. Iron and metal oxides deposit as a layer that is stubborn and often permanent. Physical damage from chlorine is not fouling at all: the membrane material itself is degraded and no cleaning restores it, which is why the carbon prefilter matters so much.

What you can actually do at home

Flushing is the useful household action. Many systems have a flush arrangement, and running the membrane with the drain open for a period sweeps loose material off the surface, which can recover some performance on a system that has been sitting unused or lightly scaled. Beyond that, check the simple causes first, because a slow system is far more often a blocked prefilter, low line pressure or a storage tank that has lost its air charge than a fouled membrane. Fix those before touching the element.

Why chemical cleaning is a commercial job

Proper cleaning means circulating a solution at a controlled temperature, pH and flow for a defined period, in a loop built for the purpose, then rinsing and verifying rejection afterwards. A domestic cartridge has no such loop, the housing is not designed for chemical service, and there is no way to confirm the result except by measuring rejection, at which point you know whether you have wasted an afternoon. Given the price of a household membrane against the effort and the uncertainty, replacement is the rational choice.

Prevention is where the effort pays

Change the carbon prefilter on schedule, because chlorine damage is permanent and the prefilter is the only thing preventing it. Soften or otherwise control hardness on hard water, since scale is the main fouling mechanism in homes. Remove iron ahead of the system on well water. Do not restrict the drain line to save water, because the reject flow is what sweeps rejected material off the membrane face. Can I clean a household RO membrane?

Not properly. Domestic cartridges are not built for chemical cleaning, and replacement is cheaper and more certain than an unverifiable attempt.
