Water softener cleaning covers three separate jobs that get confused with each other: emptying and washing the brine tank, cleaning the resin bed chemically, and clearing the small parts in the valve that actually move the brine. Doing one and calling it maintenance is why a softener that gets attention every year still stops making soft water.
The brine tank: sludge, bridges and mush
Salt carries insoluble residue that settles as a brown sludge in the bottom of the tank, and cheap rock salt makes far more of it than solar or evaporated pellets. A crust of salt can also bridge across the tank leaving an air gap beneath it, so the unit draws water and no brine and quietly regenerates with nothing. Break any bridge with a broom handle, run the salt down low, scoop the residue, wash the tank and the salt grid with warm soapy water, rinse and refill.
Cleaning the resin bed itself
The resin is a bed of beads that hold hardness and release it during regeneration, and over years it accumulates iron, manganese and organic material that brine alone will not strip. Resin cleaners are acidic or reducing solutions poured into the brine well and drawn in on the next regeneration. Iron fouled resin is the common case, and Penn State Extension notes that oxidized iron fouls resin, which is why an iron filter upstream is a better answer than repeated chemical cleaning.
The parts that block: injector, screen and brine line
The venturi injector in the control valve creates the suction that pulls brine from the tank, and it has a screen ahead of it. Both plug with grit and salt fines, and the symptom is a full brine tank that never draws down while the water quietly goes hard. Shut off and depressurize, unscrew the injector cap, lift out the injector and screen, rinse them in warm water and clear the passages with a soft bristle, never a wire. Check the brine line and the air check at the same time.
Sanitizing after any service
Opening a softener exposes the media to whatever is on your hands and tools, and a resin tank is a warm, wet, high surface area environment where bacteria are content. After a repair, after a long vacancy, or if the softened water starts tasting stale, sanitize by adding unscented household bleach to the brine well and running a manual regeneration, then flushing every tap until the chlorine smell clears. Check the manufacturer's instructions first, since some resin types specify a different sanitizer.
How often, and what to check on the way
Look in the brine tank monthly when you add salt, take the lid off properly and confirm the salt level is actually falling. Wash the tank out annually or whenever residue is visible. Use a resin cleaner on schedule if the water carries iron. Confirm hardness at a tap with a test strip a couple of days after any service, because that is the only real proof that the cleaning worked. Questions people ask about water softener cleaning
How often should the brine tank be cleaned out?
Once a year is a reasonable default, and more often with rock salt, which leaves much more insoluble residue. Inspect it whenever you top up salt so a bridge or sludge layer is caught early.
Can I use vinegar to clean a water softener?
Vinegar is fine for scale on external parts and a nozzle, but it is not a substitute for a proper resin cleaner formulated for iron and organic fouling, and it should not be run through the bed as a routine treatment.
Why is my brine tank full of water and not using salt?
That usually points at a blocked injector or screen, a plugged brine line, or a failed air check, so the valve cannot draw brine. Clean the injector assembly before assuming the whole softener has failed.
