A regen water softener cycle is the softener cleaning itself. Ion exchange resin has a finite number of exchange sites, and once they are full of calcium and magnesium the bed stops softening. Regeneration floods the resin with strong brine to strip the hardness back off and send it down the drain, restoring capacity for the next run.
The stages of the cycle
A standard regeneration has four or five steps. Backwash reverses flow up through the bed to lift and rinse out accumulated sediment and to reclassify the resin. Brine draw pulls concentrated salt solution from the brine tank through the resin, displacing hardness ions with sodium. Slow rinse gives the brine contact time to finish the exchange. Fast rinse flushes the remaining brine to drain and repacks the bed. Refill then puts a measured amount of water back into the brine tank to make the solution for the next cycle, which is why there is always water in the salt tank.
Timed, metered and what the reserve is for
A timer valve regenerates on a fixed schedule regardless of use, which wastes salt in a quiet week and runs out of capacity in a busy one. A metered valve counts the water that has actually passed and regenerates when the calculated capacity is nearly used, which is why metered controls dominate now. Metered valves hold back a reserve, an allowance of soft water kept in hand so the household still has capacity between the trigger point and the middle of the night when the cycle actually runs.
Setting it up correctly
Three settings decide whether the softener performs. Hardness, which must be entered from a real measurement of your water, plus a compensation allowance if the water carries dissolved iron. Salt dose, which trades efficiency against capacity: a lower dose per regeneration uses salt more efficiently, a higher dose recovers more capacity per cycle. And the time of day, normally set to the early hours because during regeneration the house is on bypass or on hard water. Get the hardness figure wrong and every other setting is wrong with it.
When regeneration stops working
The classic failure is a salt bridge: a crust of hardened salt spans the brine tank with a void beneath it, so the tank looks full while the brine draw is pulling on plain water. Break it up with a broom handle and check the level after the next cycle. Other suspects are a plugged injector, a brine line air leak, a stuck valve seal kit, or a drain line restriction that starves the backwash. Is there supposed to be water in the brine tank?
Yes. The refill step adds a measured volume after each cycle so brine is ready for the next one. What matters is that the level falls after a regeneration, showing brine is actually being drawn.
Can I use water during a regeneration?
You can, but it will be hard or untreated because the valve is in bypass during the cycle. That is why regenerations are normally scheduled for the early hours of the morning.
