Water softener regeneration is the recharge cycle that puts a spent resin bed back to work. The bed is backwashed to lift the debris out, brine is drawn through it to strip off the accumulated hardness, the brine is rinsed away, and the tank refills so there is fresh brine ready for next time. Most softener problems are really regeneration problems, so knowing the four stages tells you where to look when the water goes hard.
The four stages, in order
Backwash reverses the flow up through the bed, lifting and expanding it so trapped sediment and broken resin fines wash out to the drain. Brine draw pulls concentrated salt solution from the brine tank slowly down through the bed, which is where the actual chemistry happens: the high sodium concentration forces calcium and magnesium off the resin sites and out to the drain. Slow rinse continues that displacement without new brine. Fast rinse packs the bed back down and flushes the last of the salt so your first glass afterwards does not taste briny. Finally the valve refills the brine tank with a measured amount of water, which sits and dissolves salt until next time.
Metered versus timed control
A timed valve regenerates on a clock, every few days regardless of how much water you used. It is simple and it is wasteful: it recharges beds that are half spent and it runs hard water when guests double your usage. A metered valve counts the water passing through and regenerates when a set volume has been treated, so salt and water consumption track real use. Better metered valves keep a reserve, holding back some capacity so a regeneration can wait until the small hours rather than leaving you with hard water at dinner. If you are choosing hardware, the valve type matters more to running cost than the brand on the tank.
When it runs, and why that is usually the middle of the night
Most controllers default to the early hours because the house cannot use soft water during a cycle. Some valves put the house on hard water bypass during regeneration; others physically stop flow. Either way you do not want it happening during a shower. A cycle takes the better part of an hour to an hour and a half depending on the stage timings, and it sends the backwash and brine rinse to a drain, which needs an air gap so nothing can siphon back. If the household includes shift workers or the softener serves a business, the start time is programmable and should be moved.
The faults that make regeneration look fine while doing nothing
A salt bridge leaves a hard crust spanning the brine tank with air underneath, so the valve draws water rather than brine and the cycle accomplishes nothing while sounding completely normal. A blocked injector or a kinked drain line does the same. A drain line run too high, or too long, starves the draw. And a resin bed fouled with oxidized iron does not release its load however good the brine is: Penn State Extension notes that softeners can remove dissolved iron only within a narrow window, with pH above 6.7, hardness between 3 and 20 grains per gallon and dissolved iron under 5 mg/L, and that oxidized iron fouls the resin. Typically around an hour to an hour and a half from backwash to the end of fast rinse, depending on how the valve stages are programmed.
Can I use water during regeneration?
Some valves route the house to untreated bypass water, others stop flow entirely. Either way, avoid heavy use until the cycle finishes.
How often should a softener regenerate?
It depends on hardness and household use. A metered valve decides for itself, which is why it wastes far less salt than a timer.
Why does my water taste salty after a cycle?
