The brine tank for a water softener is the plastic drum beside the resin tank that holds the salt. Its job is to make a saturated salt solution, hold it until the control valve calls for a regeneration, then let the valve draw it through the resin to recharge the bed. Almost every softener that stops softening has a brine tank problem.
What is inside and what it does
The tank holds salt, water and a brine well: a vertical tube containing the float assembly and the safety float that shuts off filling if the level rises too high. Water is added to the tank after each regeneration, sits in contact with the salt, and dissolves until it is saturated. When the control valve begins the next regeneration, it draws that saturated brine out through the injector and down through the resin bed, where the concentrated sodium displaces the calcium and magnesium the resin has collected. Those hardness minerals leave with the rinse water, the bed is recharged, and the tank refills ready for next time. Many tanks also have a grid plate at the bottom to keep salt above the water.
Salt bridges and salt mush
These are the two classic faults and they are opposites. A salt bridge is a hard crust that forms across the tank, usually where humidity has caused the salt to cake, leaving a solid arch with an empty void beneath it. The tank looks full from the top while the water underneath touches no salt at all, so regenerations run with plain water and the water goes hard. Break it gently with a broom handle rather than anything that might puncture the tank. Salt mush is the reverse: fine salt recrystallizing into a sludge at the bottom that blocks the flow and clogs the draw. Mush usually has to be scooped out and the tank washed. Both are far more common with fine or dusty salt in a humid basement.
Filling, cleaning and the float
Do not fill the tank to the brim. Keeping it partly full, and letting the salt run reasonably low before topping up, gives the salt less chance to cake and lets you see what is happening in there. Once a year, or whenever softening performance drops, take the tank apart: scoop the salt out, remove the grid plate, wash out the sludge that collects underneath, rinse and refill. While it is empty, check the brine well and float assembly, since a float stuck high overfills the tank and a float stuck low starves the regeneration of brine. Reading the tank when the water goes hard
If soap stops lathering and scale reappears, the brine tank is the first place to look before anyone is called. Is there actually salt in it, or is there a bridge? Is there standing water far above the salt, suggesting a float or drain fault? Is the water at the bottom a sludge rather than a clean brine? Is the tank bone dry after a regeneration, meaning it never refilled? Each of those points at a different cause and most are fixable in an afternoon.
