Finding water in water softener brine tanks is usually normal: most designs keep some standing water in the salt tank so brine is ready for the next regeneration. It becomes a fault when the level climbs unusually high, the salt never seems to drop, or the tank threatens to overflow, and those symptoms trace to a short list of causes you can check yourself in an afternoon.

What a normal brine tank looks like

In a wet-brine softener, the common design, a modest depth of water sits in the bottom of the salt tank between cycles, often hidden under the salt so you only see it when salt runs low. The level also varies with the regeneration cycle: the valve refills the tank with fresh water after each regeneration so it can dissolve salt into brine for the next one. So water a few inches deep, salt that visibly drops over weeks, and soft water at the taps together mean the system is healthy. Get familiar with your tank's usual level so a change stands out when it happens.

Too much water: the usual causes

A rising or persistently high level means brine is not being drawn out, water is being overfilled, or both. The common culprits: a clogged venturi injector, the small nozzle that creates suction to draw brine, blocked by salt sediment; a drain line that is kinked, frozen or plugged so regeneration cannot discharge; a brine float valve stuck open or set too high; and a salt bridge, a hard crust of salt suspended above the water so the tank looks full while no salt actually dissolves. Control valve faults, worn seals or a failed piston can also leave refill running longer than it should.

A troubleshooting order that finds it fast

Work from cheap to expensive. First break up any salt bridge with a broom handle and check for mushy salt sludge at the bottom, scooping it out if present. Second, inspect the full drain line run for kinks, crush points and a clear termination. Third, pull and clean the injector and its screen, a ten-minute job on most valves. Fourth, check the brine float moves freely and the safety float is not jammed. Then run a manual regeneration and watch a full cycle: you should see brine draw down during the cycle and a controlled refill at the end. If the level still climbs, the control valve needs service.

Preventing the problem from coming back

Most standing-water faults start with salt. Use a quality pellet salt, keep the tank no more than about two-thirds full so bridging is less likely, and let the level run down before topping up rather than constantly filling. Clean the brine tank out fully every year or two, wash the sediment from the bottom, and clean the injector at the same time. Keep the drain line protected from freezing and from being crushed by stored boxes.
