What crystal water softener salt is and when to use it

Crystal water softener salt, usually sold as solar salt crystals, is one of three common forms of sodium chloride for a brine tank, alongside compressed pellets and blocks. They are all the same chemical and they do not behave the same way in a tank, and choosing badly is the most common cause of a softener that stops softening.

What crystals are and where they come from

Solar salt crystals are produced by evaporating seawater or brine in shallow ponds, leaving irregular crystals that are then screened. They dissolve readily, which is their strength, and they carry slightly more insoluble matter than the purest evaporated grades, which is their weakness. That residue accumulates at the bottom of the brine tank over years as a sludge, and it is why a brine tank needs emptying and cleaning periodically rather than simply being topped up indefinitely.

Crystals against pellets, and bridging

The failure that stops softeners is a salt bridge: a hard crust forming across the tank with an air gap beneath it, so the water below never contacts salt, no brine is made and the resin is never recharged. The softener runs its cycle perfectly and the water stays hard. Crystals are more prone to bridging in humid conditions than pellets, which are compressed and dissolve more evenly. In a damp basement or a garage in a humid climate, pellets are the safer choice.

Which softener suits which form

Follow the manufacturer, because it is not arbitrary. Cabinet units with a small integrated brine tank generally specify pellets, since the compact tank bridges easily and there is little tolerance for residue. Larger separate brine tanks handle crystals well. Block salt is used only in softeners designed for it and must never be substituted into a tank expecting loose salt. Whatever the form, do not mix types in one tank, since the different dissolution rates encourage bridging at the boundary.

Keeping the brine tank right

Keep the tank between roughly a quarter and two thirds full rather than filled to the top, since a deep column packs and bridges under its own weight. Break up any crust with a broom handle before adding more, and if the softener has stopped working, check for a bridge before anything else.
