Shower heads filled with colored beads, crystals or mineral stones are sold on an appealing idea: that the material inside is treating the water as it passes. Some of what is in these heads does something measurable and some of it does not, and the difference matters because the problem most buyers are trying to solve is one none of it addresses.
What is actually inside them
Three kinds of material turn up. KDF, a copper zinc granular medium, genuinely reduces chlorine and performs well in hot water, which is why serious shower filters use it. Calcium sulfite is also used for chlorine reduction and works. Then there are the decorative components: colored mineral beads, tourmaline, germanium and similar stones, marketed with claims about ionization, energising or vitalising the water. Contact time in a shower head is a fraction of a second, and those materials have no established mechanism to act in it.
The complaint most buyers actually have
People search for these heads because of hard water: limescale on the screen, spotting, and the feeling that soap will not rinse away. No shower head softens water. Hardness is dissolved calcium and magnesium arriving with the supply, and removing it requires ion exchange in a tank with a brine supply, treating the whole house. A head containing minerals cannot take minerals out, which is worth stating plainly because the marketing language often implies exactly that.
What a shower filter does deliver
On a chlorinated supply, chlorine reduction is real and noticeable: less smell in the steam and less of the drying effect on skin and hair that many people attribute to hardness. That is a genuine benefit and the honest reason to buy one. On a chloraminated supply the benefit is much smaller, since chloramine needs contact time no shower device provides. Check which disinfectant your utility uses before buying, because it decides whether the unit will do anything at all.
Judging one before buying
Look for KDF or calcium sulfite named in the specification and a stated cartridge life, and treat everything about energising, ionising or restructuring the water as marketing. Check whether the cartridge is replaceable or the head is a sealed unit, since a sealed head is more expensive to keep running. Expect a modest drop in flow.
