An electric water softener is a conventional ion exchange softener whose control valve runs on power. The electricity does not soften anything: it drives a timer or a meter, positions the valve motor through the regeneration cycle, and holds the settings. Understanding that is what separates a real softener from the electronic descalers sold under similar language.
What the power is actually for
The softening itself is chemistry happening in the resin bed under line pressure, and it needs no electricity at all. Power arrives for the control head: a small transformer feeds a board that counts either elapsed days or gallons used, and drives a motor that rotates the valve into backwash, brine draw, slow rinse, fast rinse and back to service. Better heads use the same power for a display, a salt level sensor and a service reminder. That is the whole electrical story, and it is why a softener draws a trivial amount of power despite running continuously.
Metered versus timer control
This is the distinction that matters when buying. A timer head regenerates on a fixed schedule you set, so it regenerates whether or not the bed needs it, wasting salt and water in a quiet week and delivering hard water in a busy one. A metered head counts the water that has passed and regenerates when the calculated capacity is used up, adapting automatically to guests, holidays and seasonal use. Metered valves cost more and repay it in salt. If a unit is described as electric, ask which of the two it is, because both use power and only one uses it intelligently.
Non electric softeners are a different design
There are genuine softeners that use no power at all, driven hydraulically by the flow of water through the valve, and twin tank designs of this kind regenerate on demand without a board or a timer. They are well regarded in places with unreliable power and they avoid the electronics as a failure point. They are not the same thing as a salt free conditioner, which does not exchange ions and does not remove hardness. When comparing, sort products into three groups first: powered ion exchange, non electric ion exchange, and conditioners that leave the minerals in the water.
Power cuts, settings and failure modes
Most control heads keep their programming through an outage on a capacitor or a small battery, and the worst outcome of a long cut is a clock needing reset and a regeneration happening at the wrong hour. The valve normally holds in the service position, so the house keeps water while the head is dead, though the bed will eventually exhaust without regeneration and hardness will break through. Do not switch a softener off at the socket while away for a long period. Leave it powered so it can regenerate, or put it in a bypass and sanitize the bed on return, because resin sitting stagnant for weeks can grow bacteria.
Installing one: what the power needs are
The transformer plugs into an ordinary outlet, which means an accessible receptacle within reach of the head, ideally not one controlled by a switch that someone will flip. In a garage or basement that outlet should be protected appropriately and mounted where a leak cannot reach it. Route the low voltage lead so it cannot lie in the path of drain water and cannot be pulled when the salt tank lid comes off.
