A water softener loop diagram shows a simple thing that confuses people because it is drawn as a circle: the incoming main is interrupted, sent out to the softener and brought back, so that everything downstream of the loop gets soft water and everything upstream stays hard. Read it as a detour on the main line rather than a loop, and the rest of the arrangement makes immediate sense.
What the lines on the diagram mean
The main enters from the meter or the pressure tank. Before the softener there is usually a branch for outside hose bibs, drawn as a tee heading off to the left or right and never rejoining. Then two stubs drop from the ceiling or come out of the wall: one carries hard water out to the softener inlet, the other returns soft water from its outlet. Between those two stubs the diagram shows a bypass valve or a loop valve, which is what lets you connect the two directly when no softener is fitted.
What should and should not be on the soft side
The water heater goes on the soft side, so hot water is softened and the tank stops scaling. All indoor fixtures normally follow. Outside hose bibs and irrigation should stay hard, because sodium is unhelpful to plants and there is no point spending softener capacity on the lawn. Some households also leave one kitchen cold tap hard for drinking water, particularly where the household prefers the taste, though a point-of-use filter is a more usual answer to that.
Finding an existing loop in the house
In a garage or basement, look for two capped copper or plastic stubs coming out of the wall about knee to waist height, close together, often with a valve linking them or a short jumper pipe joining the pair. That jumper is the giveaway: it exists purely to keep water flowing while no softener is connected. If there is a floor drain, a standpipe or a laundry sink within a few feet and an outlet on the wall, the builder intended a softener there and the install becomes a connection job.
Drawing your own before you buy
Sketch the main from where it enters, mark the water heater, mark every branch that leaves before the intended softener position, and mark the drain you will use. That single sketch answers whether outside taps are already excluded, whether the heater is downstream, and how far the drain line has to travel.
