Water softener pipes are the part of an install that gets rushed and then lived with for years. The connections decide whether you can service the unit without shutting the house off, whether the outside tap wastes softened water, and whether the drain line ever backflows. Getting the loop right is a matter of order, direction and a few code details.
The shape of a correct softener loop
Water enters the house, passes the main shutoff, then a bypass arrangement, then the softener, then goes on to the house. The bypass matters more than anything else on the list: with it you can isolate and service the softener while the house keeps running on hard water. Most units ship with a bypass valve on the control head, and a three-valve loop in the pipework adds a second layer that lets you remove the unit entirely. Take the outside hose bibs and, usually, the kitchen cold tap off before the softener.
Direction, and what goes in front
The control valve is marked for inlet and outlet, and reversing them stops regeneration working properly, so check the arrows rather than the convenience of the pipe run. Anything that would damage resin belongs upstream. Sediment blinds a resin bed and a prefilter catches it. Chlorine degrades resin over time, so on chlorinated supplies a carbon stage first extends resin life. Iron is the classic case: Penn State Extension notes a softener can remove dissolved iron where pH is above 6.7, hardness is 3 to 20 grains per gallon and dissolved iron is under 5 mg/L, but oxidized iron fouls resin, so anything beyond that gets an iron filter first.
Pipe material and the fittings between
Copper, PEX and CPVC all work, and most control valves come with plastic threaded yokes designed for a union so the head can be removed. Do not sweat copper directly to those yokes, since the heat will destroy them: sweat a stub, let it cool, then thread it on with tape or thread sealant. Where copper meets a steel line, use a dielectric union so the two metals do not corrode each other. Support the pipework independently rather than letting it hang on the control head, and keep flexible connectors short enough not to restrict flow.
The drain line and the overflow
The regeneration drain line carries brine to a standpipe, laundry tub or floor drain, and it must have an air gap so nothing can siphon back into the softener if the drain blocks. Secure the end so it cannot whip out under flow, keep the run as short and as level as the manufacturer allows, and never reduce its diameter. Questions people ask about water softener pipes
Should the outside tap be on softened water?
Normally not. Softened water gives no benefit to a lawn or a car wash and costs salt, so hose bibs are usually taken off the line before the softener.
Can PEX be used for water softener connections?
Yes, and it is common. Use the manufacturer's yoke or union fittings so the control head can still be removed, and support the pipe rather than hanging weight on the valve.
Does the drain line need an air gap?
Yes. Without one, a blocked drain can siphon waste back into the softener. Codes require the gap, and it is the single most commonly skipped detail on a softener install.
Which way round do the inlet and outlet go?
Follow the arrows stamped on the control valve. Reversing them prevents proper regeneration and can push resin toward the outlet, so the marked direction is not optional.
