Water softener drain line: where it goes and how to run it

A water softener drain line carries brine and rinse water away during regeneration, and it must end at an approved receptor with an air gap: a standpipe, floor drain or utility sink, never a sealed connection into the sewer. Get the termination and the routing right and the line is trouble-free for years; get it wrong and you risk backflow contamination or a flooded floor at two in the morning.

What the drain line is for

Keep the run as short and straight as practical. Avoid kinks, avoid low sagging loops that trap brine, and secure the tube so regeneration pressure cannot whip it out of the standpipe. If any part of the run passes through an unheated space, a frozen line is a real risk in winter and will back discharge up into the softener.

Three faults cause most drain line trouble. A clogged or crushed line makes the softener regenerate poorly, leaving hard water and sometimes salty tap water, because brine cannot rinse away.
