Fitting a water softener drain air gap that satisfies the code

The air gap on a softener drain is a code requirement rather than a refinement, and it exists because the alternative depends on the drain never backing up. Meeting it is simple, and the ways it gets defeated are common enough to be worth naming, because most of them look tidy and satisfy nobody except the person who installed them.

What the gap has to be

A physical vertical space between the end of the softener's drain hose and the receiving drain, open to the air, so that nothing in the waste pipe can be siphoned or pushed back into the softener and from there into the household supply. Codes specify a minimum distance, usually related to the diameter of the discharge, and the gap must be above the flood level of whatever receives it. It is the same principle that puts a tap spout above the rim of a basin rather than below it.

Fittings that satisfy it

A proprietary air gap fitting that clamps to a standpipe or laundry tub and holds the hose at the correct height is the tidiest answer. A standpipe with the hose terminating above its top, secured so it cannot slip down, is the traditional one. A laundry tub with the hose clipped over the rim works where the tub is not used for anything that would raise the water level. In each case the hose end must be secured, because a loose end whips under regeneration flow and ends up outside the receiver.

The ways it gets defeated

Pushing the hose down into the standpipe so it looks neat, which removes the gap entirely and is the single most common error. Taping or sealing the hose into a drain connection. Terminating below the flood level of a laundry tub or a floor drain that can back up. Running the hose into a condensate line or a trap primer. And relying on a long horizontal run to a drain, which restricts flow and degrades regeneration even when the gap itself is correct.

Beyond the gap, the run has to let the valve push its backwash flow: follow the manufacturer's limits on length and lift, use the full bore of the fitting rather than reducing it, and keep the route as straight as practical, since a restricted drain quietly ruins backwash without producing any error. Clamp the hose to the valve barb properly, because regeneration generates enough pressure to blow an unsecured hose off.
