A reverse osmosis water filter diagram is really a map of one water stream splitting into two. Cold feed water enters, passes through pre-filters, meets the membrane, and leaves as purified permeate to the tap and as concentrate to the drain. Once you can name the two exits, every other line on the drawing falls into place.
The feed side: valve, pre-filters, membrane
Trace the drawing from the left. A saddle or angle-stop feed valve taps the cold supply under the sink and sends water into the first housing, a sediment cartridge that catches grit and rust so the finer stages are not blinded. Next comes carbon, drawn as one or two housings, whose job is chlorine and taste compounds. On municipal water that carbon stage is protective as well as cosmetic, because chlorine attacks the thin-film membrane material. Only then does the line reach the membrane housing, drawn as a long horizontal tube with an inlet at one end and two outlets at the other.
The split: permeate line and concentrate line
At the membrane the diagram forks. The permeate line is the water that pushed through the membrane film and it carries on to the storage tank and the faucet. The concentrate line, labelled brine or reject on some drawings, carries the rejected minerals and salts away. It runs through a flow restrictor, which is the small inline part that holds pressure against the membrane, then to a saddle clamp on the sink drain above the trap. If you see an air gap fitting on the faucet body, the drain line runs up to it and back down, and that loop on the diagram is a backflow protection, not a filter stage.
The tank, the automatic shutoff and the last stage
The storage tank sits below the manifold with a single line to a tank ball valve. Inside, a rubber bladder is pressed by air in the lower half, which is why the tank pushes water back out when you open the faucet. The automatic shutoff valve, drawn as a small square block with four ports, senses the tank filling and stops production so the system does not run to drain forever. After the tank comes the post-filter, a slim inline carbon cartridge that polishes taste on the way to the faucet, and on some drawings a remineralizing or alkaline cartridge in the same position.
Using the diagram to troubleshoot
Most faults are located by asking which side of the split failed. Slow flow at the faucet with a healthy drain trickle points at the tank, either low air charge or a failed bladder. Constant drain flow with a full tank points at the shutoff valve or the check valve on the permeate line. No drain flow at all points at a blocked restrictor and will shorten the membrane's life. Poor taste with normal flow usually means an exhausted post-filter rather than a failed membrane. Why does the diagram show a line going to the drain?
Reverse osmosis works by sweeping rejected minerals off the membrane surface with a continuous flow of water, and that flow has to go somewhere. The drain line carries it to the sink waste above the trap.
What is the small block with four ports?
That is the automatic shutoff valve. It compares tank pressure against feed pressure and closes the feed when the tank is full so the system stops sending water to drain.
Where does the remineralization cartridge sit?
