A layout drawing for a point of entry installation is worth making even if it never leaves the back of an envelope, because it forces four decisions that are painful to change afterwards: where the water enters, what order the stages sit in, how each one is isolated, and where the drains go. Everything else is pipe.
The spine: main, stages, house
The line runs from the incoming main through the main shut off, then through each treatment stage in order, then out to the house, and the water heater sits downstream of everything so the hot side is treated by consequence. The fixed order is sediment first, then pH correction if the water is acidic, then iron and manganese, then softening, then carbon, then any membrane, then ultraviolet last of all. Each of those placements exists because a stage either damages, or is damaged by, one placed wrongly against it.
Isolation and a whole system bypass
Draw an isolation valve either side of every vessel and a union at each connection, so a single stage can be pulled without touching its neighbours or draining the house. Then draw one bypass across the entire train: two valves and a crossover, which keeps the household in water during any work and lets you prove whether the treatment is causing a symptom. Label every valve on the drawing and on the pipe, because in three years nobody will remember which does what.
Drains, air gaps and where they can go
Backwashing vessels and softeners send water to drain, and every one of those connections needs an air gap so nothing can siphon back. Show where each drain line runs, how far and how high, because the valve can only push so far and a restricted drain quietly ruins backwash. Show where the discharge goes: a floor drain, standpipe or laundry tub, and check local rules if a septic system is receiving softener brine. Route them so grit and salt never run onto planting.
The details worth drawing
A sampling tap between every stage, which turns future diagnosis into a measurement instead of a guess. Pressure gauges either side of the sediment stage. Clearance below each housing equal to a cartridge length, and headroom above each vessel to lift its valve and load media. Bracket positions carrying the weight, since a full vessel is heavy and the pipework must not support it. And a power point for the control valves.
