The main types of whole house water filtration systems

Whole house systems split into a handful of families, and each one exists to solve a different water problem. Choosing between them is not a matter of ranking brands, it is a matter of reading your water test and picking the family that treats what the test found, then deciding whether one stage is enough or you need a train of them.

Cartridge systems

A housing holds a replaceable cartridge, usually sediment, carbon block or a pleated element, and the whole thing mounts on the main line after the pressure tank or meter. They are the cheapest to install and the easiest to service, and they suit city water where the job is chlorine, taste and particulate. The tradeoff is that every cartridge eventually clogs and drops pressure, so on dirty water you are changing them often enough to resent it.

Backwashing media tanks

A tall fiberglass tank carries a bed of media such as catalytic carbon, manganese dioxide, calcite or a mixed filtration media, with a control valve on top that periodically reverses flow to flush trapped material to drain. There is no cartridge to buy, the media lasts for years, and the tank handles high flow without choking. In exchange it needs a drain connection, enough incoming flow to lift the bed, and it uses water every time it regenerates.

Softeners and salt free conditioners

A salt based softener is technically not a filter: it exchanges calcium and magnesium for sodium on a resin bed and regenerates with brine, which is the only approach that genuinely removes hardness. Salt free conditioners change how hardness minerals crystallize so they are less likely to stick to pipes and heaters, leaving the minerals in the water. Both sit in whole house lineups, but only the ion exchange unit will change the number on a hardness test.

Disinfection and whole house reverse osmosis

Ultraviolet chambers inactivate bacteria and viruses without removing anything, and they need clear water in front of them. Chemical injection, usually chlorine or peroxide, disinfects and simultaneously oxidizes iron and sulfur so a downstream media tank can catch it. Whole house reverse osmosis is the rare heavy option: it needs a break tank, a repressurization pump and a drain for reject water, and it exists for supplies that are simply too high in dissolved solids for anything else.

How the types get combined

Real installations are usually a sequence, not a single box. On a well the common order is sediment, then oxidation and iron or sulfur removal, then the softener, then UV, with a drinking water unit at the kitchen sink.
