A filter on a garden hose is a narrow tool with three genuine uses: stopping spot marks when washing a car, removing chlorine before watering sensitive plants or filling a pond, and keeping sediment out of a tank or a pressure washer. Understanding which one you are buying for matters, because the cartridge that suits one is close to useless for another.
Car washing is a hardness problem, not a dirt problem
The white spots left on paintwork after washing are dissolved minerals left behind when droplets evaporate, so the thing that causes them is hardness, not particles. A sediment cartridge on the hose will not stop them. What works is deionizing resin, which strips dissolved minerals so the water dries without leaving anything, and that resin is consumed steadily and is not cheap. On very hard water it is consumed quickly. The cheaper alternative is drying the car properly rather than treating the water at all.
Ponds, plants and chlorine
Chlorine and chloramine in a municipal supply are the reason for filtering water going into a pond, an aquarium top up or a bed of sensitive plants, and a carbon cartridge on the hose reduces chlorine effectively. Chloramine is a different matter: it needs catalytic carbon and far more contact time than a small inline unit gives at hose flow, so a filter that handles chlorine may barely touch it. Check which disinfectant your utility uses before assuming a hose filter is protecting fish or seedlings from it.
Sediment for tanks, pressure washers and equipment
Filling a water tank, a pressure washer reservoir or a caravan system is where a straightforward sediment cartridge earns its place, catching grit and rust flakes lifted from the supply pipework so they do not end up in a pump or a tank that is hard to clean. Choose a rating suited to what is being protected rather than the finest available, because hose pressure and flow are modest and a fine cartridge on a long fill becomes a bottleneck. Fit it at the tap end where it is supported rather than dangling on the hose.
What these units cannot do
An inline hose filter is small, sees a high flow rate for its size, and therefore gives very little contact time. It will not make water drinkable, will not remove bacteria, will not soften water in the sense a softener does, and will not reduce most dissolved contaminants. Where the requirement is drinking water for a camper or a boat, that is a different specification with certified cartridges and usually a disinfection stage.
