On a well producing sand, the expensive damage happens upstream of anything most people think of as treatment. Abrasive water wears pump impellers, scores seals, fills the bottom of the pressure tank and shortens the life of every valve it passes. Where the separator is placed decides which of those it prevents, and the usual placement prevents none of them.
What sand does to a pump
A submersible pump running on sandy water wears its impellers and diffusers steadily, losing output long before it fails outright, and the wear accelerates as clearances open up. Seals are scored by the same abrasion. Jet pumps suffer at the nozzle and venturi. None of that is recoverable, and it happens continuously from the moment the well starts producing solids. A separator downstream of the pump does nothing about it, which is worth being clear about before assuming the problem is solved.
Placement, and the honest trade
The standard domestic position is after the pressure tank and before all treatment, which protects the treatment train, the plumbing and the fixtures, and is easy to fit and service. It does not protect the pump or the tank. A separator on the discharge line before the pressure tank protects the tank but still not the pump. Protecting the pump itself needs downhole measures: a screen, repositioning the pump higher in the borehole, or a shroud, all of which are well work rather than plumbing work.
Why a separator and not a filter
On a well genuinely producing sand, a cartridge filter fitted first is consumed within days and becomes a constant expense and chore. A centrifugal separator spins the grit out with no media at all, so nothing blinds, nothing needs replacing and the pressure drop stays roughly constant regardless of load. It takes the bulk off so that whatever follows deals with fine silt rather than grit. It needs a flow within its rated range to separate properly, which is a specification people overlook.
The purge and the underlying question
The collection chamber must be purged, manually on a schedule or by a timed automatic valve, and a full chamber passes grit through as though the unit were not there. Route the purge to a drain that will not block on grit. Then ask why the well is producing sand at all: a failed screen, a pump set too low, over pumping or a collapsing formation are the usual causes, and every one of them is worth correcting.
