Using a water testing meter properly, and knowing when to stop

A water testing meter earns its place when it is used as a routine instead of a one-off curiosity. That means calibrating it, sampling the same way each time, logging what you read and knowing precisely which questions it is not equipped to answer. Used carelessly it produces numbers that feel authoritative and mean nothing.

Calibrate before you believe anything

Conductivity and pH probes drift. Both types are calibrated against standard solutions, pH against buffers at two or three points and conductivity against a single standard, and the solutions themselves expire and go off once opened. Calibrate at the start of any testing session that matters, pour standard into a separate cup rather than dipping into the bottle, and never return used solution to its container.

Sampling technique changes the number

Run the tap for a couple of minutes before sampling unless you are deliberately testing first-draw water that has stood in the pipes. Rinse the sample cup with the water being tested rather than with tap water from somewhere else. Read at a settled temperature, because conductivity climbs as water warms and the automatic compensation on cheap meters is approximate. Keep the electrode wet between uses; a dried out probe drifts badly or dies.

Build a log, not a snapshot

A single reading tells you almost nothing, since you have no baseline to compare it against. The same reading taken monthly at the same tap tells you when something has changed, which is the genuinely useful signal: a softener that has stopped regenerating, a membrane that is fading, a well that has shifted after heavy rain. Write down the date, the tap, the temperature and the value. A cheap notebook makes a cheap meter far more valuable.

Where the meter stops and the laboratory starts

No handheld meter detects bacteria, lead, arsenic, nitrate or pesticides. The EPA is clear that private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, so as a well owner nothing is measured unless you order it, and a meter on the kitchen counter does not discharge that duty.
