Which water quality test meter answers which question

Handheld meters are convenient and specific: each one answers one question and says nothing about the others. Buying the wrong one for the question you have is the usual disappointment, and no meter of any kind answers the question people most often want answered, which is whether the water is safe.

Conductivity and TDS meters

These pass a small current through the water and convert conductivity to a dissolved solids estimate. They respond to every dissolved ion without distinguishing among them, so beneficial minerals count the same as unwanted ones and hardness cannot be isolated. Their genuinely useful job is checking a reverse osmosis membrane: compare feed and permeate readings to get a rejection rate, take a baseline at commissioning, and track it, since a falling rate reveals a failing membrane before taste changes.

pH meters

These read the water's acidity, which is what decides whether it is corroding your copper pipework and whether other treatment will work. They need calibration against fresh buffer solutions at two points to be trusted, they drift with age, and the electrode must be stored wet in the manufacturer's solution rather than dry or in distilled water. Temperature affects both the electrode's response and the water's actual pH, so a temperature reading should accompany every result.

Hardness and chlorine

Hardness is measured by titration or strips using chemistry specific to calcium and magnesium, not by any conductivity meter. The USGS classes water as soft at 0 to 60 mg/L as calcium carbonate, moderately hard at 61 to 120, hard at 121 to 180 and very hard above that. Chlorine is measured with a colorimetric test, and it is the quickest way to know whether a carbon filter is still working, since carbon exhausts with no visible sign.

What no meter tells you

Whether the water is microbiologically safe. Coliform bacteria, E. coli, nitrate, arsenic and lead are all invisible to every handheld meter, and clear water reading beautifully on a TDS pen can carry any of them. Those need laboratory analysis or, for bacteria, a presence and absence kit with incubation time. Meters monitor a system you already understand; they do not establish whether you have a problem.
