Test equipment splits into three groups and they are not substitutes for one another. Handheld meters give an instant reading of a general property. Strips give a rough indication of specific parameters. A mail in laboratory kit gives defensible numbers for the contaminants that actually decide treatment. Buying the wrong group is how households end up with a drawer of gadgets and no answer.

Meters: fast, repeatable, and narrow

A total dissolved solids meter and a pH meter are cheap, instant and genuinely useful for one thing each: watching a trend. A TDS meter cannot tell you what the dissolved material is, so a reading tells you nothing about safety, but comparing feed and product readings across a reverse osmosis membrane is exactly how you know the membrane is still working. Both types need calibration against a standard solution to stay honest, and an uncalibrated meter that has lived in a drawer for a year produces confident numbers that mean nothing at all.

Strips and drop kits: indication, not measurement

Test strips for hardness, chlorine, iron, nitrate and pH are read by comparing a color to a chart, which makes them subjective, sensitive to lighting, and coarse. That is not useless. A hardness strip that puts you clearly in the hard band is enough to justify a softener, and a chlorine strip is a reasonable way to confirm a carbon filter is still working. Treat them as a triage tool that tells you whether a real test is worth paying for, keep them dry and in date, and never use a strip result as the basis for a health decision.

Certified laboratory kits, and when they are the only answer

For anything that matters to health, the equipment is a sample bottle and a courier. A certified laboratory gives you defensible results for bacteria, nitrate, arsenic, lead, and metals, with a method and a detection limit stated. No consumer gadget measures those meaningfully. The EPA notes that every community water system publishes an annual Consumer Confidence Report and maintains a finder for them, so households on a public supply should read that report first: it may answer the question at no cost and will tell you what is worth sampling at your own tap.

Matching the equipment to the decision

Work backwards from what you would do differently. If the question is whether to soften, a hardness strip or a laboratory hardness figure is enough. If it is whether the RO membrane is spent, a TDS meter used at two points settles it. If it is whether the water is safe for an infant, or whether an old service line is contributing lead, only an accredited laboratory result will do, and the sampling protocol matters as much as the analysis.
