Digital meters: TDS, pH and what they miss
Handheld meters read total dissolved solids, pH, conductivity or temperature instantly and repeatably. A TDS meter is the right tool for watching a reverse osmosis membrane age: rising readings on the treated side say the membrane is due. What a meter cannot do is identify anything: a low TDS number does not mean safe, and a high one does not name the culprit. Meters also drift, so calibration solution belongs in the same drawer. Treat meters as monitoring instruments for systems, not as verdicts on drinkability.
Mail-in kits and labs: where health answers come from
For city households, the free first step is the utility's Consumer Confidence Report; the EPA requires every community water system to publish one each year and maintains a finder. For well owners the stakes are higher: private wells are not federally regulated, so an accredited lab panel is the only real audit of the supply. Mail-in kits are a convenient front end to those same labs, provided you follow the sampling instructions exactly.
