Water testing strips are paper or plastic strips with reagent pads that change color when dipped, giving you a reading in under a minute by matching against a printed chart. They are genuinely useful for the parameters they cover, and genuinely unable to answer the questions that matter most on a private well. Knowing which is which saves money.
What strips measure well
Strips work best on parameters that are present in relatively large concentrations and that produce a strong, unambiguous color reaction. Total hardness, free and total chlorine, pH, total alkalinity and iron are the common ones, and for those a strip will reliably put you in a band. That is often all you need: sizing a water softener requires a hardness figure in grains per gallon, and a strip reading of hard or very hard is enough to tell you a softener is warranted and roughly what capacity to shop for.
What they cannot do
Strips give you a band, not a number, and the band boundaries are wide. They cannot resolve contaminants present at trace concentrations, which is most of the health-relevant list: lead, arsenic, PFAS and volatile organic compounds are all outside what a color pad can detect. Bacteria strips exist but they are presence-absence indicators rather than counts, and they do not distinguish which organism. Anything that will inform a health decision or a mortgage or real estate requirement needs a certified laboratory, because a strip result is not documentation.
Using them properly
Most bad strip results come from technique rather than the strips. Test cold water that has run for a minute, so you are sampling the supply and not the water that sat in the pipe. Dip for exactly the time printed on the bottle and do not swirl unless told to. Read the pads at the stated time under natural light, because the colors keep developing and a late reading drifts high. Keep the bottle tightly closed with its desiccant inside, since reagent pads are moisture sensitive and an open bottle in a damp bathroom degrades within weeks.
Where strips fit on a private well
Private wells are not regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, so nobody tests them but the owner. Around 15 percent of the US population, over 43 million people in more than 23 million households, relies on one, and a USGS study of 2,100 private wells found about one in five carried at least one contaminant above a human-health benchmark. Strips are the right tool for monitoring between annual lab tests: they will show you when hardness changes or iron appears, which is a signal to send a sample away. Questions people ask about water testing strips
Are water testing strips accurate?
They are accurate enough to place a parameter in a band, which is fine for hardness, chlorine and pH. They cannot give the precise figures a laboratory report provides.
Can strips detect lead or arsenic?
No. Those are present at trace concentrations well below what a reagent pad can register, so a certified laboratory test is the only reliable route.
Do test strips expire?
Yes. The reagent pads are moisture sensitive, so keep the bottle sealed with its desiccant and replace it by the printed date. A degraded strip reads low without any obvious sign.
Can I size a water softener from a strip reading?
You can get close. A hardness band plus your household water use gives a workable capacity estimate, though a laboratory number in grains per gallon makes the sizing tighter.
