Water testing for heavy metals: sampling, labs and what to order

Water testing for heavy metals is a laboratory job, and the sample you take decides whether the result means anything. Metals arrive by two very different routes: some are dissolved in the source water from the geology around it, and some are picked up from your own pipes and fittings, and the sampling protocol for each is different.

Which metals to order, and why

A standard metals panel usually covers lead, copper, arsenic, iron, manganese, chromium, cadmium, mercury and zinc, and a well panel adds uranium or radon where the local geology calls for it. Lead and copper come from plumbing. Arsenic, uranium and manganese are typically geologic and come with the groundwater. Iron and manganese are aesthetic rather than health concerns at household levels but drive the treatment choice, since they carry secondary standards with recommended maximums of 0.3 mg/L for iron and 0.05 mg/L for manganese. Ask the lab what its panel actually includes before ordering, because the word comprehensive means different things to different labs.

First draw or flushed: the sample decides the answer

For lead and copper you want a first-draw sample: water that has sat still in the plumbing for several hours, collected without running the tap first, from the fixture you actually drink from. That is the worst case and the one that tells you about your pipes. For source water metals like arsenic, you want the opposite: run the cold tap until the water is noticeably colder so you are sampling the well or the main rather than the plumbing. Taking one sample and hoping it answers both questions is the most common way a metals test ends up uninterpretable.

Use a certified lab, not a strip

Home test strips have their uses for hardness, chlorine and rough pH, but they cannot measure metals at the concentrations that matter. Order a kit from a state-certified drinking water laboratory. It will arrive with preserved bottles, sometimes containing acid, which must not be rinsed out, along with instructions on hold times and how quickly the sample has to get back. Fill to the line, cap immediately, keep the sample cool and ship it the same day where the instructions say so. Chain of custody paperwork matters if the result may be used in a property transaction or a dispute with a utility.

Well owners are on their own

Private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act. The EPA notes that around 15 percent of the US population, more than 43 million people, rely on private wells, and a USGS study of 2,100 of them found about one in five carried at least one contaminant above a human-health benchmark. That means nobody samples your well unless you do. Test at least annually for the basics, run a metals panel when you buy the property and whenever a neighbor reports a problem, and keep the reports so you can see a trend rather than a snapshot. Reading the report and deciding what to fit

A lab report lists each analyte, the measured value, the detection limit and the comparison benchmark. Two traps catch people out. First, not detected means below the detection limit, not zero, so check that the limit is low enough to be useful. Second, a value just under a benchmark is not a reason to relax if the trend is rising. Bring the report to any vendor before you buy equipment, because arsenic, lead and manganese are removed by different mechanisms and a system chosen without the numbers is a guess with an invoice attached.

Do I need to test if I am on city water?

The utility tests the water it delivers, but not your plumbing. If you have older pipes, brass fittings or a possible lead service line, a first-draw sample at your own tap is the only way to know.
