What a water test meter reads, and what it cannot see

A water test meter is a probe that passes a small current between two electrodes and reports how easily the water conducts it. Dissolved salts conduct, so the reading rises with the total dissolved solids in the sample. That single number is genuinely useful for a few jobs and misleading for most of the questions people buy the meter to answer.

The reading is a sum, not an identity

Conductivity cannot tell one dissolved salt from another. Sodium from a softener, calcium from a limestone aquifer, nitrate from a field and harmless bicarbonate all push the number in the same direction. So a meter can tell you that the water carries plenty of dissolved material, and it can never tell you which material that is or whether any of it matters to your health.

What it is honestly good at

The meter shines as a before-and-after tool on one machine. Read the feed water and the product water on a reverse osmosis unit and the difference shows how well the membrane is still rejecting solids. Track that pair monthly and a rising product reading tells you the membrane is tiring long before the taste changes. It is also a fast way to confirm that a distiller is doing its job.

Hardness is a different measurement

The USGS defines hardness as dissolved calcium and magnesium, reported as calcium carbonate: soft up to 60 mg/L, moderately hard 61 to 120, hard 121 to 180, and very hard above that. A conductivity meter does not separate calcium and magnesium from everything else in solution, so it cannot place your water in those bands. For hardness, use a titration test kit or a lab number in grains per gallon.

What no meter will find

Bacteria, lead, arsenic, nitrate, pesticides and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances are all invisible to a conductivity probe, and several of them matter at concentrations far below anything an electrode could register. Questions people ask about water test meter

Can a water test meter tell me if my water is safe?

No. It reports dissolved solids, not safety, and every contaminant that actually poses a health risk can be present at a level the meter will never show.

Does a low reading mean the water is clean?

It means little is dissolved in it. Distilled water reads very low and rainwater running off a dirty roof can read low too, so the number alone proves nothing about contamination.

What should I use a meter for instead?

Use it to watch one system over time: compare feed and product water on a reverse osmosis unit and log the pair so you can see the membrane fading.
