A digital total dissolved solids meter measures the water's ability to conduct electricity and converts that into a number using a fixed factor. It is quick, cheap and reasonably repeatable when looked after, and it answers a narrower question than most people assume. Used for comparisons it is a genuinely useful instrument; used as a verdict on water quality it is misleading.
Taking a reading you can trust
Rinse the probe in the water you are about to test rather than testing straight from a dry pocket, since residue from the last sample shifts the result. Let the reading settle rather than taking the first number that appears. Use the temperature compensation if the meter has it, because conductivity changes with temperature and a cold sample reads differently from a warm one. Calibrate against a standard solution on the manufacturer's schedule, and again after the meter has been dropped or left somewhere hot.
Three comparisons worth making
Feed water against reverse osmosis product water, taken before the storage tank, tells you directly whether the membrane is still rejecting what it used to, and it is the single most useful maintenance check an RO owner can perform. One tap tracked over months flags a change in the supply worth investigating. And a softened line against an unsoftened one shows the exchange happening, though the total will barely move since sodium replaces the hardness rather than removing it.
What the number cannot tell you
It cannot tell you what is dissolved, only how much. Harmless dissolved limestone and something you would rather not drink can produce the same reading, and many contaminants that matter are dangerous far below the concentrations that move the meter at all. The USGS describes hardness specifically as dissolved calcium and magnesium, classified as soft at 0 to 60 mg/L as calcium carbonate, moderately hard at 61 to 120, hard at 121 to 180 and very hard above 180, and a conductivity meter does not measure that either.
Choosing one
Look for a meter you can actually calibrate, since a sealed unit with no calibration route drifts into being decorative. Temperature compensation is worth having. A hold function makes reading easier at a tap. Beyond that, the expensive models mostly add ranges and resolution that a household will not use.
