Water hardness test strips give you a usable number in under a minute, and that number is what a softener is sized and programmed from. They are simple to use and easy to use wrongly, and almost every misleading reading comes from one of three mistakes: the wrong tap, a running stream, or reading the color too late.
Using one properly
Fill a clean glass with cold water and dip the strip into the glass rather than holding it under a running tap, because a stream washes reagent off the pad and reads low. Submerge for the time on the packet, usually a second or two, then remove it and hold it level without shaking, since shaking runs reagent from one pad into the next on multi-pad strips. Read the color against the chart in good daylight, at the interval the instructions state. Colors continue to develop, so a strip read a minute late reads high.
Choosing the right tap
Test the cold line. Hot water chemistry differs and the strip is calibrated for cold. Test at a tap that is not downstream of any existing treatment, which usually means an outside spigot on a hard water bypass or a tap ahead of the softener, otherwise you are measuring the equipment rather than the water. If you already own a softener, test both raw and treated water on the same day: raw tells you what to program, treated tells you whether the unit is keeping up, and the pair is far more useful than either alone.
Reading the units
Strips are printed either in grains per gallon or in milligrams per liter as calcium carbonate, and sometimes both. The USGS classification, expressed in milligrams per liter as calcium carbonate, runs soft from 0 to 60, moderately hard from 61 to 120, hard from 121 to 180, and very hard above 180. Softener valves are usually programmed in grains per gallon, and every valve manual carries the conversion factor. Convert once, write the result on the tank, and use the same number every time the unit is adjusted.
What strips cannot tell you
A hardness strip measures hardness. It says nothing about iron, manganese, nitrate, arsenic, lead, bacteria or total dissolved solids, and on a private well those are the results that determine which equipment you need and in what order. Strips also compress at the top of their range, so very hard water reads as simply off the chart. And a strip past its expiry date, or one stored in a damp bathroom with the cap left off, gives readings that look perfectly plausible and are wrong. Keep the tube sealed and dry.
When to move to a kit or a laboratory
A titration kit, where you add drops until the color flips, costs little more and gives a genuine number rather than a band, which matters when you are choosing between softener sizes. A certified laboratory panel is what you want on a well, both because hardness interacts with iron in softener sizing and because you need the rest of the chemistry anyway. Questions people ask about water hardness test strips
Why does my test strip read soft when my water clearly is not?
The usual causes are testing under a running tap, which washes the reagent away, testing downstream of an existing softener, or using strips that have expired or absorbed moisture.
Should I test hot or cold water?
Cold. Strips are calibrated for cold water, and hot water from a tank can carry different chemistry and sediment that skews the reading.
How often should I use a hardness strip?
Once before buying treatment, again after installation to prove it works, then every few months to confirm your softener is still delivering soft water between regenerations.
Do strips measure iron as well as hardness?
Hardness strips do not. Multi-parameter strips include pads for iron and other parameters, but for a well a laboratory panel is more reliable for anything you will spend money on.
