Water test strips are a screening tool, not a laboratory. Used properly they will tell you roughly how hard your water is, whether chlorine is present, and whether pH or nitrate is somewhere it should not be. Used carelessly, or trusted for things they were never designed to detect, they produce confident answers that are simply wrong.
What strips do well
Hardness is the standout, because the result is a band rather than a precise figure and a band is all you need to size a softener. The USGS classifies water as soft up to 60 mg/L as calcium carbonate, moderately hard from 61 to 120, hard from 121 to 180 and very hard above 180 mg/L, which maps neatly onto the color blocks on a strip vial. Free chlorine, pH and total alkalinity also read usefully. Nitrate and nitrate plus nitrite strips are a reasonable screen: a clear positive means send a sample to a lab, which is exactly the job a screen should do.
Technique decides whether the number means anything
Run the tap until the water is cold and representative, then fill a clean glass and dip the strip in that rather than holding it under a running faucet, which washes the reagent off the pad. Do not shake the strip. Hold it level, wait exactly the time printed on the label, and read it in daylight against the chart on the vial rather than in a lit bathroom, where the light shifts the colors. Keep the vial sealed with its desiccant, never touch the pads, and throw out expired strips, because oxidized reagent pads read low and read low quietly.
What strips cannot detect
No strip detects bacteria. No strip detects PFAS, arsenic, uranium, radon or volatile organic compounds. Lead strips exist and are widely sold, but lead sampling depends heavily on stagnation time and on the form the lead is in, and a color pad is a poor instrument for a contaminant that matters at very low levels. Strips also have coarse detection limits, so a result reading near zero can still sit above a health benchmark. Anything you would act on medically or spend real money treating deserves a certified lab result instead.
When to stop screening and start testing
Strips are a good fit for tracking something you already understand: checking softener performance week to week, confirming a carbon filter is still removing chlorine, or watching hardness after a media change. Escalate to a lab when a strip reads positive for nitrate, when you are on a private well and it is your annual test, after any flooding or well work, when buying a house, or when anyone in the household has a specific health reason to be certain. Questions people ask about water test strips
Can water test strips detect bacteria?
No. Bacteriological testing requires a sterile bottle, a certified method and a laboratory. No dip strip on the market gives a trustworthy answer about coliform or E. coli.
Are hardness test strips accurate enough to size a softener?
Generally yes. Hardness is reported in bands rather than exact figures, and the band is what a softener setting needs, though a lab or dealer test is worth confirming before a large purchase.
Why do my strips give different results each time?
Usually technique: waving or shaking the strip, holding it under a running tap, misreading the timing, or reading under artificial light. Expired or humidity damaged strips also drift low.
Should I trust a lead test strip?
Treat it only as a screen. Lead results depend heavily on how long the water sat in the pipes, and the levels that matter are low enough that a certified lab test is the reliable route.
