Color matching by eye under kitchen lighting is not precise, and the difference between two adjacent patches on the chart can be the difference between two treatment designs. Penn State Extension notes that softeners can remove dissolved iron only when pH is above 6.7, hardness is between 3 and 20 grains per gallon and dissolved iron is under 5 mg/L, and a reading sitting near that threshold needs a meter or a laboratory rather than a strip.

Using them properly

Sample from a cold tap with the aerator removed, after running until the water is cold and steady. Dip for the time the packet specifies and read at the time it specifies, since the color continues developing and a strip read late reads differently. Compare against the chart in good natural light rather than under a kitchen lamp, which shifts the perceived color. Read promptly after sampling too, because water standing in an open container takes up carbon dioxide and its pH drifts.

Storing them so they stay honest

Strips degrade with exposure to air, moisture and light, and degraded strips read wrong rather than failing visibly. Keep the container tightly closed, take out only what you need without touching the pads, keep the desiccant in the tube, and note the expiry date.
