Hard water test strips give you a hardness band in under a minute, and for deciding whether you have a softening problem at all they are entirely adequate. The technique matters more than the brand: dip once in a moving sample, do not swirl, hold it level, and read at the time printed on the bottle. Read late and almost every strip drifts harder.
The scale the color blocks map to
Hardness is dissolved calcium and magnesium, and the USGS classifies it as soft at 0 to 60 mg/L as calcium carbonate, moderately hard from 61 to 120, hard from 121 to 180, and very hard above 180 mg/L. Strip charts usually print those same bands, sometimes converted to grains per gallon, which is the unit softener sizing is done in. That conversion is the source of most confusion at the counter: a number that looks alarming in one unit looks modest in the other. Note which unit your strip chart uses before you compare it to anything a salesperson tells you, and write the unit down with the reading.
How to take a sample that means something
Run the cold tap for a good thirty seconds to a minute so you are testing what comes from the main rather than what has been sitting in the pipe overnight. Test cold water, since heating changes chemistry and precipitates hardness. Do not test from a fixture with an aerator caked in scale, and do not test from the softened side if what you want to know is your raw hardness. If you have a softener already, test the raw inlet and the treated outlet separately: the pair of numbers tells you whether the unit is working, which one reading alone never can. Keep strips in their sealed bottle, cap them immediately, and discard any that have discolored, because humidity ruins them quietly.
Where strips stop being the right tool
A strip gives you a band, not a number, and softener sizing works better with a real figure, especially when iron is present and the sizing calculation has to add compensation for it. Strips also tell you nothing about the things that decide whether hardness is your only problem: iron, manganese, pH, dissolved solids, bacteria. Testing after treatment, and on a schedule
Strips earn their keep as a monitoring tool. Once a softener is in, a strip on the treated line every month takes seconds and catches the failures that otherwise go unnoticed for a season: a salt bridge in the brine tank, a stuck valve, a bypass left open after a service visit, or resin nearing the end of its life. Softened water should read at the soft end of the scale consistently, and a reading that has crept up two bands is a service call, not a coincidence. Keep the readings on a note stuck to the utility room wall so a trend is visible rather than remembered.

Do hard water test strips expire?
Yes. The reagent pads degrade with moisture and age, so keep the bottle sealed, check the date, and discard strips that have changed color in the bottle.
Should I test hot or cold water?
Always cold. Heating water precipitates some hardness onto the heater and pipes, so a hot sample understates what is actually in your supply.
What reading means I need a softener?
There is no legal threshold. Most households notice scale and soap problems from the hard band upward, and the decision is about symptoms and appliance protection.
Can a strip tell me if my softener is working?
