There are three ways to answer how hard is my water: read your utility's annual report, dip a test strip at your own tap, or send a sample to a laboratory. The number matters because every softener is sized from it, and a softener programmed with a guessed hardness is the most common reason one underperforms.
The bands, and what they mean
The USGS defines hardness as dissolved calcium and magnesium and classifies water as soft from 0 to 60 mg/L as calcium carbonate, moderately hard from 61 to 120, hard from 121 to 180, and very hard above 180. Soft water lathers easily and leaves nothing behind. Moderately hard water is usually livable with occasional descaling. Hard and very hard water is where the water heater scales, the shower head crusts, the glassware clouds and laundry comes out stiff, and where a softener or conditioner pays for itself.
Method one: your utility's report
If you are on municipal water, the number may already exist. The EPA requires every community water system to publish an annual Consumer Confidence Report and maintains a finder for locating them, and hardness is commonly listed alongside the regulated contaminants. Two caveats: not every utility reports hardness, since it is not a health-based parameter, and the figure is a system average that can vary between sources and seasons. Use it as your starting point, then confirm at your own tap if you are about to buy equipment.
Method two: test at the tap
A hardness test strip dipped in a glass of cold water gives you a usable reading in seconds, and a titration kit, where you add drops until the color changes, is more precise for the same money. Test the cold line at a tap that is not downstream of any existing treatment: sampling after a softener tells you the softener is working, not what your water is. If you already have a softener, test both the raw water at an untreated outside spigot and the treated water indoors, since the pair together tells you far more than either alone.
Method three: the laboratory
A certified laboratory reports hardness as part of any general chemistry panel, and on a private well that panel is worth having anyway for iron, manganese, pH, nitrate and total dissolved solids. Lab numbers are what a professional installer will size equipment from, and they resolve the awkward cases: very high hardness beyond the range of a strip, hardness alongside iron where the two treatments interact, and readings that vary through the year on a shallow well. Grains per gallon, and programming the softener
Softener control valves are usually programmed in grains per gallon while test results are often given in milligrams per liter as calcium carbonate, and the two are related by a fixed conversion factor that every valve manual prints. Convert once, write the number on the tank, and use it every time the unit is adjusted. If your water also contains iron, most valves ask you to add a compensation figure on top of the measured hardness, because iron consumes exchange capacity. Getting these two entries right is what separates a softener that keeps up from one that runs out mid-week.

What is a normal hardness for a US home?
It varies enormously by geology. The USGS bands run from soft at up to 60 mg/L as calcium carbonate through to very hard above 180, and many regions sit in the hard band.
Are hardness test strips accurate enough to size a softener?
They are good enough to tell you which band you are in and to program a valve. For a private well, a laboratory panel is better because it also reports the iron that affects sizing.
Can hardness change over the year?
