An under sink ultraviolet unit is a small chamber plumbed into the cold feed, treating water on its way to a dedicated tap or to the kitchen cold outlet. It is much easier to fit than a point of entry lamp and it treats far less water, which makes the question of scope the whole decision: is drinking water the thing that needs a barrier, or is the supply itself the problem?
What point of use scope covers
It covers what comes out of that one tap and nothing else. Showers, teeth cleaning, washing food at another sink, the ice maker on an unfiltered line and the washing machine all continue to receive untreated water. That is entirely reasonable if the supply is generally trusted and the unit is a final barrier on drinking water. It is not reasonable if a well has tested positive for coliform, because in that case every fixture in the house is delivering the same organisms and one tap is not the problem.
Where it genuinely makes sense
Rented accommodation where work on the incoming main is not possible. Apartments and flats with no point of entry to speak of. Households on a municipal supply who want a final barrier against a boil notice or a distribution event without plumbing a whole house system. Holiday properties and cabins where the drinking water tap is the only one that matters. And as a last stage after a filtration train, where its job is to deal with anything growing downstream of the filters.
What it needs to work
The same three things as any ultraviolet installation. Water clear enough for light to reach organisms, which usually means a sediment cartridge ahead of it and, on well water, iron and hardness treatment as well. Flow within the unit's rating, which is easier at a single tap than across a house. And lamp maintenance, meaning annual replacement whether or not it still glows, plus cleaning the quartz sleeve. A small unit does not escape any of those requirements just because it is small.
What it does not do
It changes no chemistry at all: hardness, iron, nitrate, arsenic, lead, chlorine and taste leave the chamber exactly as they arrived. If the reason for looking is a taste complaint or a laboratory result showing a dissolved contaminant, this is the wrong stage, and a carbon filter or reverse osmosis is what the water needs. Is a point of use UV unit enough on a well with bacteria?
No. If the supply carries organisms, every tap and shower is affected, so the lamp belongs at the point of entry.
Does it need filters in front of it?
Yes. Turbidity shades organisms from the light and iron or hardness films the sleeve, so sediment and any needed treatment go upstream.
Will it improve taste?
No. Ultraviolet changes no chemistry, so taste, odor, hardness and dissolved contaminants are unaffected.
How much maintenance does it need?
