A water filter for tank fed water has a different job from one on a pressurized municipal line, because the tank itself is part of the problem. Storage means settled sediment, biofilm on the walls, whatever the roof or the delivery truck brought in, and often no disinfectant residual at all, so the filtration train starts with the tank and ends at the tap.
Work out which tank you actually have
A well pressure tank stores water briefly under pressure and mostly contributes rust flakes and the occasional bladder failure. A cistern or atmospheric storage tank holds water for days, which is long enough for sediment to settle, for organisms to multiply and for anything on the roof or in the fill hose to become part of the supply. Rainwater and hauled water tanks are the extreme case. The right filter depends far more on which of these you have than on the brand you buy.
Sediment first, sized for the load
Tank water carries settled silt that gets stirred up whenever the level drops or the pump cycles, so the first stage is a sediment filter with enough surface area to survive it. A spun or pleated cartridge in a large housing works for light loads, while heavy or seasonal sediment justifies a backwashing media tank that flushes itself instead of clogging. Draw the supply from above the tank floor rather than at the very bottom so the filter is not fed the sludge layer directly.
Then taste, odor and organics
Carbon after sediment handles the musty, earthy taste that stored water develops, along with chlorine if the tank is topped up from a treated supply. Put carbon second, never first, because it clogs fast on unfiltered water and a plugged carbon block is an expensive sediment filter. Catalytic carbon is the choice if the fill water is chloraminated. A tank that has never been cleaned will keep feeding the carbon organics faster than it can cope, so scrub and disinfect the tank before judging the filter.
Disinfection is usually the missing stage
Stored water without a residual is the classic case for ultraviolet, fitted after sediment and carbon so the light can actually reach through the water. Pressure, flow and where the pump sits
Atmospheric tanks feed a booster pump, and every filter you add takes pressure out of what that pump produces. Undersizing housings on a tank system shows up as a shower that fades whenever the washing machine fills. Fit pressure gauges before and after the filter bank so a rising difference tells you the cartridge is loading, keep the filter accessible without draining the tank, and put a bypass around the whole bank so a blocked filter never means no water at all.
Questions people ask about water filter for tank
Does a filter on a storage tank replace cleaning the tank?
No. A filter treats what leaves the tank while sediment and biofilm keep accumulating inside it. Tanks still need periodic draining, scrubbing and disinfection, and the filter lasts far longer once that is done.
Should the filter go before or after the tank?
Both positions have a role. A coarse filter on the fill line keeps debris out of the tank, and the main treatment train goes after the tank and pump where the water is pressurized and heading to the house.
Is UV needed on a tank supply?
It is common, because stored water usually carries no disinfectant residual and organisms multiply in it. A coliform test settles the question, and ultraviolet goes last in the train so the water reaching it is clear.
Will a filter hurt water pressure from a tank?
