A water filter tank is the fiberglass-wrapped vessel that holds a bed of filtration media on a whole-house system, topped by a control valve that periodically backwashes the bed to clean it. Unlike a cartridge filter, it holds years of capacity in one fill and cleans itself, which is why it is the standard shape for whole-house treatment above the smallest installations.
How a backwashing tank works
Water enters through the control valve, travels down through the media bed and exits through a riser tube and distributor at the bottom. Contaminants are caught or converted within the bed. On a set schedule or a metered volume, the valve reverses flow, lifting and expanding the bed so trapped material washes out to drain, then it rinses and returns to service. That backwash is why the tank needs a drain connection, and why it needs enough incoming flow to actually lift the bed. A tank that never gets a proper backwash compacts, channels and stops working while looking untouched.
Sizing is a flow question, not a house-size question
Tank diameter sets the surface area of the bed, which sets the service flow rate the tank can handle without pushing water through too fast for the media to act. Tank height sets bed depth and contact time. Vendors publish a service flow and a backwash flow for each tank size, and the backwash number is the one people forget: a large tank on a well with a modest pump may not receive enough flow to lift its own bed. Size against peak simultaneous demand, two showers plus an appliance, and confirm your supply can meet the backwash requirement before ordering.
The media decides what the tank does
The same tank does completely different jobs depending on what is poured into it. Catalytic carbon handles chlorine, chloramine, taste and odor on municipal water. Manganese dioxide coated media and similar oxidizing beds handle iron, manganese and sulfur on wells, often with an air pocket or an injected oxidant. Calcite raises pH on acidic wells. Multi-layer sediment media grades particles by size through the depth of the bed. Some tanks are layered deliberately, with a coarse support gravel at the bottom and the working media above. Buy the media for the test result, not the tank for the room.
Life, refills and what goes wrong
Media is consumed or fouled rather than clogged, so it is replaced in bulk every several years depending on type and load rather than swapped like a cartridge. The tank itself typically outlives several media fills. Watch for three things: a valve that stops initiating backwash, which shows up as slowly worsening performance rather than a fault light on many models; channeling from a bed that has compacted; and gravel or media appearing at the fixtures, which means a cracked distributor at the bottom of the riser. Questions people ask about water filter tank
Does a filter tank need electricity?
Most control valves do, though the draw is small. Non-electric hydraulic valves exist, and some simpler tanks are backwashed manually with a lever.
Can I refill a filter tank myself?
It is doable with a funnel, care to protect the riser tube from media falling into it, and a way to move heavy bags. Most people have it done during a service visit.
How much space does a whole-house tank need?
Allow the tank height plus clearance above it for the valve and for lifting the head off during service, plus access to a drain within reasonable reach for the backwash line.
Why is my filter tank sending water to drain constantly?
Usually a control valve stuck mid-cycle, a fouled piston or seals, or a backwash setting that never completes. It wastes a large volume, so treat it as urgent rather than cosmetic.
