A reverse osmosis system adds a membrane, a pressurized storage tank and a drain connection, and always uses its own faucet because production is slow. Measure the cabinet before you buy
The usual disappointment is space. Under a kitchen sink you are competing with the trap, the disposal, the shutoff valves and whatever is stored there. A multi-stage bracket needs its width plus clearance below each sump equal to the sump's length, because cartridges come out downwards. An RO system needs all of that plus room for a tank standing upright, which is bulkier than photos suggest. Check the depth of the cabinet, not just the width, and check that the doors close on the tubing runs.
What the installation involves
You tee off the cold shutoff under the sink with a feed adapter, run tubing to the inlet, and run the outlet to a dedicated faucet mounted in the sink's spare hole or a new hole drilled in the worktop. Stainless sinks take a hole cutter, granite and quartz need a diamond bit and care, and some worktops should be left to a professional. Maintenance, and the mistakes that cause leaks
Cartridges are rated in gallons and should be changed on flow or taste, whichever comes first. Sanitize the housings at each change on a system fed by well water. The leaks that flood cabinets nearly all come from three things: tubing pushed in less than fully so it lets go under pressure, an O-ring that was not seated or lubricated when a sump was refitted, and a saddle valve installed on a whim.
